Debunking menstrual myths

Debunking menstrual myths

Our bodies have long been the subject of taboo, especially when it comes to our menstrual cycles. This has led to all sorts of misinformation and misconceptions, some of which are really dangerous.

Join us as we set the record straight and debunk some of these myths. Knowledge is power, and we think it's imperative that everyone knows the truth about their bodies.

Myth 1: Period blood is dirty

Fact: Menstrual blood is not dirty. Yes, it can be messy but it's not toxic or harmful, and certainly not anything to be ashamed of or grossed out by. In fact, did you know the menstrual cycle is the only scarless healing process in the body? We think that's pretty powerful!

Myth 2: You should lay off exercise during your period

Fact: Exercising during your period can actually be really beneficial. Physical activity can help alleviate menstrual cramps, boost your mood, and reduce bloating. Our advice? Listen to your body and engage in exercises that feel comfortable for you, whether it’s gentle yoga, walking, or even something a bit more vigorous (also, totally understand and support lying on the couch binging the latest Netflix series if that's what you feel you need).

Myth 3: You can't get pregnant during your period

Fact: While it's very unlikely, it is still technically possible to get pregnant during your period. Sperm can live in the reproductive tract for up to five days, and if you have a shorter cycle, ovulation could occur soon after your period ends. Always use contraception if you're trying to avoid pregnancy.

Myth 4: PMS is all in your head

Fact: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a real and recognized medical condition that affects many women (up to 90% of us, depending on which study you look at). Symptoms such as mood swings, bloating, and fatigue are caused by hormonal changes in the body, and are not to be sniffed at - it can be tough! PMS is not imaginary and can significantly impact daily life for those who experience it. It's absolutely acceptable to acknowledge your PMS, listen to your body, and slow down as you need. This does not in any way make you weak.

Myth 5: Periods should always be regular

Fact: Menstrual cycles can vary greatly from person to person and can be affected by numerous factors such as stress, diet, and exercise. While 28 days is the average cycle length, we have a very broad range and it's common for these to fluctuate. Stress and even minor lifestyle changes can impact your cycle length or period duration - that's why they say the menstrual cycle is the fifth vital sign. It tells us a whole lot about our bodies!

Myth 6: Periods are painful

Fact: While menstrual cramps are common, not everyone experiences pain during their period. Also, they aren't necessarily something you should tolerate and there is a whole range of available options for minimizing pain and managing discomfort (our go to? Ginger supplements!). If you experience severe pain, it may indicate an underlying condition (such as endometriosis or fibroids), and we suggest consulting with a healthcare provider.

Myth 7: Never swim during your period

Fact: Swimming during your period is perfectly safe and can be a great way to relieve cramps. In fact, did you know the pressure from the water actually slows your menstrual flow?
